Brief analysis of Gran Torino

Film Facts
Title of film: Disgruntled Korean War veteran Walt Kowalski sets out to reform his neighbor, a Hmong teenager who tried to steal Kowalski's prized possession
Production year: 2008
Nationality: American / Vietnamese
Names of main actors: Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang, Christopher Carley
Name of director: Clint Eastwood
Plot and structure of the film
I think the most important sequence is the scene, Walt Kowalski’s house and Thao’s house were shot by the gangster.  The plot structure is about a man who was solder in Korean war and then he has a normal for old life but that’s not normal anymore since he try to protect Hmong neighbor from gangster by the wrong way. This story is linear because it’s chronological in the present. I think it has several plots to run parallel because some situation in story I don’t really know that it would be happened. The suspense built up while what Walt (the old man) will do when the gangster try to do bad thing with his neighbor and what will happened next with him. The events foreshadow is about the way that Walt try to intimidate the gangster by gun that make them resent. And in the end he was died by gangster.
Setting of the film
The story is take place in the present that according from the people emigrant from Vietnam to USA in the past to build the family. And then story run in present. The aspect of setting  made on the normal weather that is the warm weather and have a good environment. The opening scene is in old man house who live alone.
Conflict
The main character’s external is obstruct about another culture about his neighbor who are Vietnamese. But in his internal I think he just want to be a friend with them although they have a different cuture because they always do the good thing for him since he is alone in house.
Characterization
This story speak English be main language but some actor speak Vietnamese because to show that they are Hmong. I will give an example of character to describe the characterization. Walt (old man), he is the person look like angry all the time, he always want to stay alone in his house to have the normal old life but when he know his Hmong teenager neighbor they make him to be the kind person that always want to protect them from the bad persons. So in the end this character make me know that he is one of kind and good person that doesn’t want the one that he loves has dangerous.

Imagery
The symbol of this story is the Gran Torino car that at first the Hmong boy try to steel but not success but he hast to do because of the gangster. And then Hmong boy become a good friend with the owner car (old man). When the old man die, he is give this car to the boy. It’s mean that Gran Torino is the symbol for enormous friendship between the Hmong boy and the old man.
Theme
This story teach me that to solve the problem do not use force against because the problem isn’t solve but it will make this to be bigger problem.
Soundtrack
This story not use a lot of soundtrack because they want to emphasize about actor’s acting but some scene has a sad play song for sad scene.

So I think the film present the multicultural societies in the way that although we have a different culture, we can stay together, be a good friend and make a superb friendship.
